Introduction to Traffic Cycling Skills 101
This is the introductory session 1 of 3 sessions for the Traffic Skills 101 basic course that every cyclist should take. Both novice and experienced cyclists will be more comfortable and at ease while cycling on the road and in traffic after this course.
Session 1 - FREE, but $15 reservation deposit required to reserve your spot. Refunded upon attendance.
Focuses on an introduction to cycling safety and basic traffic law. We will have a classroom discussion followed by on-bike parking lot skills and a short ride on local roads. Bike and helmet are required to be brought to the class as we will be riding on the road!
Session 2 (time and date TBA)
Reviews cycling safety, "advanced" traffic law and goes more in depth into proper lane positioning. We will cover group riding, basic bike maintenance and how to fix a flat tire. We will have classroom discussion followed by on-bike skills and a ride in traffic situations.
Session 3 (time and date TBA)
Reviews "advanced" traffic law and lane positioning from session two. We will review group riding, and discuss clothing, nutrition/hydration and any individual mainteance questions. A written and practical test will be given to students in order for them to earn a certificate and advance to additional courses.
The ENTIRE course runs for 3 sessions of 3 hours in length based on the experience of the participants. Expect that there will 3 separate sessions separated by sufficient time so that you can practice the techniques you have been shown. The course is provided by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors (LCIs) who have been trained to provide the most up to date information in a manner that is clear and understandable to anyone who has been on a bike. Sessions are split between classroom and on-the-bike learning. Classes are team-taught and are limited in size so that each person can get the individual attention that they need to learn techniques and improve their riding. Classroom topics are very hands-on and practical. Each topic (below) with an asterisk* has a theoretical and practical component so that you understand why there is an emphasis on the topic. A field demonstration will show you how-to, and then you will perform the procedure under the Eyes of the LCI, who will provide feedback to improve you technique and skills. At least 3 hours will be spent on your bike learning techniques and riding. Both a written and ride test are required for successful completion
Traffic Skills 101 is based on the concept of Vehicular Cycling and Equal Sharing of the Road between motorists and cyclists. Accidents statistics will be discussed to show you what are the most common and most serious accident situations. Then proper lane positioning and interaction with traffic will be discussed so that you can anticipate and avoid potential problems before you become a statistic. You will learn the best place to ride in every road situation. You will learn how to ride predictably and visibly, moving over and sharing the road with motorists when it is safe for you, but riding so that you insist that the motorist share the road with you when that is your safer course.
